The opportunity for an artist’s intervention to create a freestanding wall running the length of Christ’s Lane was identified by InSite Arts. The artist was briefed to consider the unsightly ‘back of house’ for Christ’s College library which overlooked the new LandSecurities’ retail development. Artist Jane Watt drew her inspiration from the letters of Charles Darwin to his brother, housed in the library.
She ran various workshops with local communities and schools recording in text memories of Christ Lane.
Ultimately a vast word search containing 32,000 letters was created for the 40 x 5 m wall which would illuminate different words and text sequentially.
