Sainsbury’s Botanic Laboratory > Frieze, Gilmore Suite.

Norman's reputation for immersing himself in his subject and conducting the most extraordinary level of research is renowned. For his commission, to be installed in the Gilmour Suite and to celebrate the centenary of Darwin's death Norman travelled to the Galapagos Islands to research the diversity of fauna, flora, landscapes, but above all, the atmosphere. Returning with over 20 sketch books Ackroyd began to realise that with the scale of the Gilmour Suite, approximately ten square metres that instead of a unique image, a frieze of forty etched metal plates would provide the canvas range necessary.
